FAAY walls in Tesco flagship store in Cheetham Hill

"Because of Tesco's criteria for sustainable and low environmental impact products, FAAY walls were chosen for the construction of all the internal partitions throughout the store."

Manchester hosts many new and innovative products that are designed to lead the way in which all future new build and refurbishment projects for Tesco are built.
FAAY wall and ceiling systems predominantly use flaxboard for production.
The flax plant is an abundant resource and is grown annually for its linseed oil and stem fibres for the textile industry. It is the by-product from this that is used to produce the flaxboard meaning that none of the flax plant is wasted.

Other components used in the production of FAAY systems include plasterboard that uses flue gas gypsum, which is a by-product from the desulphurisation of power station gases, and also timber which is all from FSC regulated sites. The majority of the walls constructed were specified using FAAY's VP70 wall system. However in some areas of the store, the client required a thin wall system that was able to achieve a 50db acoustic rating. As such FAAY's IW90 wall system was recommended. The IW90 wall system has an overall thickness of just 90mm and has an acoustic rating of 50db and 82minutes fire rating. Achieving similar performance in metal stud dry lining would result in a wall thickness over twice that of the IW90. Both systems were tailored to meet the needs of the store and manufactured off-site at the production factory in the Netherlands.

This meant that the correct volume of materials could be calculated and pre-cut to the correct height so as to minimise the need for any on-site cutting and resulting waste. As well as the performance characteristics of FAAY walls, it is the simplicity and speed of construction that has also proven to be an advantage compared to other traditional systems such as metal stud dry lining.

Building freestanding three metre high walls as well as 5 metre full height walls, FAAY wall systems provide a solid wall system that is able to take up to 230kg on a single fixing, making it the perfect choice for Tesco for hanging kitchen equipment, stair handrails and sanitary items. Compared to metal stud dry lining, FAAY wall systems have shown that as well as meeting and exceeding the performance requirements required by Tesco, using FAAY walls is also able to meet the demand to reduce the environmental impact within construction.

CineMec

CineMec is a state-of-the-art Cineplex as well as a conference centre. Housed in a contemporary building with striking architecture, it is a place where people can come to be entertained as well as informed. A comfortable and innovative meeting place. Located in the middle of Holland's green heart,

High sound insulation and fire resistance
Sound insulation is always an important point for attention in cinemas. It is also very important at CineMec in view of the fact that the building houses a cinema and various congress rooms. Along with the good insulating properties, FAAY’s high fire resistance was very valuable when these wall systems were chosen.

The inner walls are made from FAAY partition walls, type VP70 (3200m2). Fire resistance of 60 minutes was required for many of the inner walls. To comply with this, extra plasterboard, 12.5 mm thick, was fixed to the FAAY wall where needed. The panels in the event hall are 'stacked' to a height of 14 metres. They form a wall that runs parallel to the A12 and lean backwards. This wall is all of 45 metres long. A choice was made to mount the FAAY wall on a wooden balk construction so that a strong and solid wall is created. This wooden construction is in turn fixed to the steel construction. The greatest advantage of this is that the entire steel construction is hidden from view and that only large areas of smooth walls can be seen. About 3200m2 of FAAY partition wall, type VP70, 2500m2 plasterboard (12.5 mm) and 1400m2 rock wool (65 mm) has been supplied and installed in total.

Particulars:
The walls in the event hall are ± 14 m high
The 14 m high and 45 m long wall leans back 1.4 m and is parallel to the highway. To install the VP70 panels, a wooden construction was made over the steel. Ultimately supplied and installed: about 3200m2 FAAY partition walls type VP70, 2500m2 plasterboard (12.5 mm) and 1400m2 rock wool (65 mm).

Faay Vianen B.V. has been recently ISO 14001 certified

Ecologically-friendly wall systems which are also environmentally safely produced

“At Faay we are passionate about a sustainable future."
The use of flax waste – a residual product from flax cultivation and therefore an infinite raw material – has been literally and figuratively the core of FAAY wall systems. As regards environmental awareness the producers Faay Vianen B.V. were way ahead of their time, although the entire operational management could not then be tested on environmental legislation because there was simply no such test.
Times change.
In the current ISO 14001 standards all sorts of things are determined which not only concern environmentally sound materials but also operational management and production methods. After all what is an environmentally friendly product worth if the method of making it causes damage to the environment?

The fact that Faay Vianen B.V. is well-disposed to the environment is proven by the choice of flax waste as an important raw material. It is therefore logical that the company obtained the ISO 14001 certificate in January 2009. With this the company now belongs with the 40% of Dutch companies in the building sector which are socially sound and want to produce sustainably and environmentally friendly now and in the long term. Director Mark Faay, “We don’t just say that we produce sustainably, but we can also prove it officially. However we cannot rest on our laurels, we will remain innovating so that we continue to take steps forward. Environmental awareness by the persons in our company is therefore an essential part of our operations.”

The ISO 14001 environmental management system is aimed at controlling and improving all sorts of environmentally related company performances. In this there are three important underlying principles: complying with legislation, controlling the environmental risk and the continuous stride for improvement in the environmental performance of a company/organisation. The internationally accepted standard ISO 14001 specifies how a good environmental management system can comply. With the help of ISO 14001 Faay can control and reduce the environmental effects (environmental risks) of operational management, partly by being aware of the consumption of energy, water and raw materials.
That Faay is taking responsibility emerges from the fact that up until now only 1100 companies are ISO 14001 certified in the Netherlands. That number should and could be much higher. A clean environment and healthy living and working surroundings are in this case not only a question of quality but also of quantity.

Is it not possible to use screws or nail guns? FAAYFOAM!

Faay Vianen B.V. has recently developed a new adhesive product for their wall systems, FAAYFOAM®. This product has been developed because in many cases it is not possible to screw wooden battens or use nail guns on (stone) floors and walls for the FAAY walls. For instance consider under floor and wall heating.
FAAYFOAM is a one-component adhesive foam and is especially suitable for attaching wooden battens to (stone) floors and walls. W’all-in-One® PG insulation panels can also be attached directly to stone walls/floors with FAAYFOAM.
In addition it is possible to use FAAYFOAM for bonding FAAY panels to each other if they have to remain detachable. This is often the case in showroom and unit buildings. FAAYFOAM applied point by point in dabs ensures extra reinforcement for detachable FAAY walls.

FAAYFOAM is a new addition to Faay's range and does not therefore take the place of the FAAYFIX® adhesive product. It is used if a FAAY wall has to be finished seamlessly; the FAAY panels can then be bonded with FAAYFIX®. It therefore concerns bonding the  chipboard tongues and/or steel profiles, tongue and groove joints and the external corners. The seams can then be easily smoothed off and a rough cement paint, plaster or FAAY Wall Spray can be applied.

Properties of FAAYFOAM
FAAYFOAM comprises a 1-component moisture-cured polyurethane. It is supplied in a 750 ml canister which can be easily connected to the adapter of a foam pistol. The contents of one canister are sufficient for a 25 m1 adhesive ridge.
The adhesive foam has an open time of 10 minutes, hardens within 30 to 40 minutes and is load-bearing after about three hours. The material is resistant to decay, heat, water and many chemicals.
An important advantage of FAAYFOAM is that less material is needed than with standard adhesives such as plaster or mortar. Partly because of this the processing is clearly faster than other methods of bonding; and in a simple and ergonomically responsible manner. FAAYFOAM can also be used to seal seams between door and window frames and the insulation.
